Friedrich's ataxia is a genetic disease that is associated with impaired systemic body function due to a defect in the production of a mitochondrial protein, namely frataxin, and leads to functional defects in the central and peripheral nervous systems. The main manifestations of this disease are progressive ataxia in walking, limb tremor, dysarthria and lack of reflexes in the lower limbs. In this article, we present a case of Friedrich's ataxia in a 24-year-old woman under treatment with conventional methods, with obvious symptoms of ataxia in walking, limb tremor and dysarthria. Within 7 months of pharmacological treatment and nutritional recommendations based on Iranian traditional medicine, mentioned symptoms decreased by 40%, 65% and 80% respectively. Dietary recommendations included avoiding viscous, dense, and cold-tempered foods, while pharmacological prescriptions included brain and nerve tonics, heart tonics, liver tonics, drugs that removed moistures and coldness from nerves and drugs to promote liver digestion.

Since time immemorial, traditional medicines especially medicinal plants have remained the mainstay of managing various ailments in underdeveloped and developing nations globally. Despite the availability of orthodox medicines, communities in low income countries rely largely on herbal preparations to manage and cure diseases. In this study, an ethnobotanical survey was conducted with a view to compile and document traditional medicinal plants and practices of six communities, i.e. three (3) from each of two Local Government Areas of Yobe State, Nigeria. Semi structured questionnaires aided by guided interviews were used to obtain information regarding traditional knowledge from 120 traditional herbalists, their attendants and community members. Results revealed that more males 80 (67%) than females 40 (33%) practice traditional medicines in general terms, with the majority of the respondents 36 (30%) falling in the age range of 51-60 years. Specifically, 28 (23.33%) traditional herbalists were observed to specialize in the treatment of fever and fever-related illnesses. A total of 60 medicinal plants belonging to 28 botanical families were identified and their medicinal values recorded. Out of the 28 botanical families recorded, Fabaceae was the most common family with nine (9) species of medicinal plants followed by Asteraceae and Moraceae families, with four (4) representative medicinal plant species each. Similarly, leaves are the most common parts used followed by stem bark and roots/root bark respectively. There is a need to scientifically validate the traditional claim for the use of medicinal plants reported in the treatment of management of disease conditions.

Suranjan(Colchicum luteum baker) is one of the oldest drugs known to mankind. Suranjan Talkh is considered as the first line drug in the management of arthritis (WajaʻulMafaṣil). Colchicum luteum is one of the rarest and hence most expensive medicinal plants. This drug has a momentous position in the Unani system of medicine and text. It is an active part of many Unani formulations due to the presence of the alkaloid colchicine, which is claimed to be effective in arthritis, gout, rheumatism, and used as a carminative, laxative, and aphrodisiac. It is also applied externally to relieve inflammation and pain. The main objective of this review paper is to elucidate the taxonomic, pharmacognostic, and physicochemical behaviour of Colchicum luteum. The present paper is also an attempt to bring this effective drug to limelight by describing its palliative, therapeutic and other uses.

As far as the living being is concerned, eye is the most valuable structure in the body. Half of the total sensory input from the entire body is contributed into the brain by the eyes. In ancient era, Eye diseases were out of control and among seven medical papyri only three Ebers, Carlsberg and London dealt with the eye problems. More than 100 eyes prescriptions, containing salts of copper, antimony, organic materials e.g. crocodile dung etc, were described in the Ebers papyrus. Unani medicineisa science of life and oldest treasure of medical science where many diseases have been described in detail with prognosis, internal medications and surgical interventions. At that time, ophthalmology was a specific field. During the blooming period of Greek Medicine, Ali Ibn Isa Kahhal was a famousophthalmologist. The Unani physicians and ophthalmologists like Al Razi, Al Zahrawi, Al Tabri, Jurjani, Ibn-Al-Haytham, Ali-Ibn Isa Kahhal, etc made major contributions in development of ophthalmology as a specialized field which provided a base for the emergence of modern ophthalmology.

The Unani classical literature and manuscripts are rich sources of knowledge which must be brought on surface and revealed. The descriptions of diseases and disorders are either available with other terms or as per clinical sign and symptoms. The descriptions are required to be compiled and furnished in a sequential and more understandable manner for the medical world. After exhaustive review of authentic texts of Unani system and knowledge update of psoriasis, it was found that yet the modern medicine has no conclusive idea about the disease pathogenesis, while descriptions of Unani physicians have a lot of scope to be explored in terms of pathogenesis and treatment of psoriasis. Their descriptions show the idea and interest of Unani scholars in psoriasis like dermatological presentations. The provided principle of management and Unani pharmacopeia is a rich treasure that needs to be highlighted and its reverse pharmacological studies are demands of the time. The description of disease as per the humoral concept and concept of Tabiat and temperament is interesting and logical. The management based on blood purification, elimination of morbidity either direct or through concoctive and purgative principles is more effective than other so far available and trending modes of treatment. The morbidities of heavy molecular weights could be removed directly through cupping and leeching, which has an add on effect in the treatment process with blood purification and concoctive and purgative regimes.

Bibliographic Details
Mohammad Ebrahim Zaker, Hassan Otukesh
Conventional Medicine and Rhazes’ Viewpoints on Urology
Tehran, The Written Heritage Research Center (Markaz-e pajuheshi-e miras-e maktub), 2020
555 p., Paperback / Hardcover
Rials 970.000/ Rials 1.170.000
ISBN: 978-600-203-197-6
Mohammad Ebrahim Zaker and Hassan Otukesh provide a comprehensive guide to Rhazes’ (Razi’s) viewpoint on urology and “Conventional Medicine and Rhazes’ Viewpoints on Urology” is a great resource for those looking to review this topic. The book is split into two main parts with sub-chapters, which makes it more understandable. “Conventional Medicine and Rhazes’ Viewpoints on Urology” begins with an introduction to Rhazes as a wonderful scholar of science and culture of Iran by Otukesh. Otukesh, who is a pediatrics nephrologist, appreciates the work of Rhazes and other scholars who pay careful attention to urine findings of each patient and try to associate these findings with clinical signs and symptoms. This requires follow up of studying urine of each individual for days and hours and connecting the results together, this is what todays’ doctors and medical students do very rarely; Otukesh continues. He and Ebrahim Zaker who are both investigators and researchers of medical manuscripts, lend their expertise to this book aimed at increasing the knowledge of interested individuals especially medical doctors, and students wishing to expand their knowledge of medicine and combine the conventional medicine with valuable points of Iranian (Persian) medicine. Ebrahim Zaker is a dentist and doctor of dental surgery.
The book begins with a scientific chapter discussing Rhazes’ viewpoint on urology. Here, the parts of Rhazes’ book named Alhavi fi-al-tib about urine and its different aspects are mentioned. Characteristics of normal and good urine; various colors that urine may have including white, red or black; types of urine sediment; and detection of pregnancy by observing urine are among the topics of this part. The content itself is well written, offering depth and background to interested individuals.
In another part, the authors have discussed the history of urology and urogenital organs. Herein, the sources which Rhazes used in volumes nine, ten, and nineteen of Alhavi fi-al-tib have been mentioned. According to the book, Rhazes has used 53 essays and articles compiled by Iranian, Greek, and Egyptian naturalists on the anatomy and physiology of reproductive and urinary organs from ancient times to the time he lived.
Section two of the book provides information on the conventional medicine findings. This section covers physiology of kidneys and analysis of urine from physical and chemical views. The book then introduces the microscopic properties of urine, and after that covers articles subspecialized on urine and its use in diseases. Some of the mentioned diseases in diagnosis of which urine test is helpful include: endocrine diseases, diabetes mellitus, gastric cancer, lung problems and cardiac diseases. The high degree of evidence-based material is one of the main advantages of this book.
In conclusion, this excellentbook provides a comprehensive review of Rhazes’ viewpoints and conventional medicine on urine, its application in various conditions and diseases, and urogenital system. Although “Conventional Medicine and Rhazes’ Viewpoints on Urology” covers topics of interest to all clinicians, the depth of some of the subjects is more interesting for experienced practitioners, particularly those with a special interest in ancient medical manuscripts.
